Heightened sensitivity.Wednesday, December 14, 2005 An author I read once discussed how she believed that during women's monthly cycles all five senses were at a heightened sensitivity, making women during this time more in tune with what and how they were feeling, in every aspect.
This may not always mean an emotional sensitivity, as men like to point out (and usually fear), but a touch sensitivity and a hearing sensitivity and a smell sensitivity too. For the record, my mom always said that she smelled smells more intensely and saw colors more vividly around her cycle. I love this part of being a woman. I love it because it almost seems like a privilege to get these super-charged senses every once in a while. I love it because I think the author portrays kindness in this truth. But I love it most because I can feel it; I love it because as a woman I know that right now when people piss me off, they really piss me off. I know that when I think the commercial is sad, it's really sad. I know that when I think my co-workers are lazy, they really truly are lazy. I love this truth because it doesn't write women off as "crazy" because of their monthly cycles, but instead this mentality allows and encourages everything that flows through a woman's senses to be demonstrated in its actual amount of intensity. Therefore, I say no more social graces that tell me not to disagree with religious men, no more nice girl with the blatantly rude customer, no more 'don't cry - it's just a commercial,' no more 'I have to deal with the shit of irresponsible people;' instead, I say enjoy this sense of freedom that's normally inhibited the other 21 days of the month - for these seven days be heard, dammit! And woman, the people will hear you! So have at it, ladies. Let it all out. (And maybe, once women get used to speaking through their full senses, they'll realize they do have a lot to say and are feeling much more than they used to admit and that their thoughts do indeed make sense, and then, just maybe, we can start a revolution!) |
