And if a person believes they'll never get ahead in life due to their own self-pity, then they won't allow anyone else to get ahead in life either.

That's where the bitterness comes in, and the guilt-trips.

However, today is Christmas Eve. Enjoy your parties, your families, your memories. If you start feeling greedy upon the plethora of presents or covetous about the lack of presents in comparison to another, think about what it is you really want; what unmet need is stirring within you, urging you to take and take and take, because something else is missing in your life. And figure it out. Get to its root. Don't write it off as depravity or human nature or the repercussions of Christmas. Listen to that greed and then satiate it, in the healthiest and safest way possible.

(Whew - don't know if that's a dangerous thing to write or not!)

What I mean is, look at the reality of your life. Look at your own humanity. Realize that life, for everyone, is always a struggle in one way or another. Admit that you may be tired of struggling and may want things without working for them. Realize that you may have ideals that are unrealistic, unattainable or completely insufficient for meeting your needs. Mostly, I guess, know yourself entirely this Christmas, greed and selfishness and all, and know that Christ came to help you with your humanity, even the parts you feel you cannot admit to others.
