Recent Musings: Wait - whose life is it, anyway? |
A culture all my own.Friday, September 8, 2006 Ever have a day when you realize your differences with other people can be exhausting and trying? Although differences are what makes love amazing and people intensely interesting, it can also be a drain on one's system when trying to interact.
The reason I write this is because while I'm learning in social work about diversity, I've read of the admission that coexisting between cultural differences may wear a person down. Culturally, I'm not so physically or socio-economically different from the people that I love, and yet, while being in close relationships, I find that cultural difference can vary even within the "same" type of people. Differences arise in how one spends their time at home, how one unwinds at the end of the day, how one relaxes or how one motivates him or herself to action. Even these small differences seem to take a toll on me when I interact closely with others. Perhaps these differences are more personality than cultural, yet I still feel the differences impacting my personhood. With that being said, let me also say that I am happy with my life right now. I love the people that I have relationships with and I love the man I'm going to marry. I just want to admit that sometimes I have a difficult time adjusting to being alive and interactive with other humans. Isn't that just the oddest statement ever? |
